National top wrestlers tournament begins in Bac Ninh, HCM City beat Ninh Bình at volleyball event, FPT and Academy of Finance triumph at VUG,Saigon Heat beat Thang Long Warriors at VFL

Wrestlers perform at the National Top Wrestlers Tournament in Bắc Ninh Province yesterday. 

The National Top Wrestlers Tournament began yesterday in Từ Sơn Town, Bắc Ninh Province. The event attracted 46 leading Vietnamese wrestlers from teams across the country. They will compete in a knock-out format in nine weight categories. According to Nguyễn Việt Hùng, chairman of the National Traditional Wrestling Referee Council, Bắc Ninh’s event is the top wrestling event of Việt Nam. The three-day event, organised by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and Kinh Bắc Traditional Wrestling Association, will conclude tomorrow.

HCM City vs Tràng An Ninh Bình in the first round of Group B at the National Volleyball Championship on April 15. 

HCM City defeated Tràng An Ninh Bình 3-2 in the first round of Group B at the National Volleyball Championship on Sunday. The game was held in Gia Lâm District’s Gymnasium in Hà Nội. HCM City won 25-23, 23-25, 33-31, 17-21, 15-10. Notably, Tràng An Ninh Bình have three national players - Nguyễn Xuân Thành, Giang Văn Đức and Nguyễn Hoàng Thương - who played at the Asian Volleyball Championship last year in which Việt Nam ranked 10th for the first time.  The team’s former national player, Nguyễn Văn Hạnh, was judged the best player in the game. HCM City team do not have any national players at the national ongoing event.  Meanwhile, in the northern province of Hải Dương’s Gymnasium, Lienvietpostbank beat Mikado Thái Bình 3-0 (25-14, 25-12, 25-20) in the first round of Group A. The event, in which 10 male teams and 10 female teams across the country are participating, will give away a total prize of VNĐ432 million (US$18,780). The winners and runners-up in each group will earn tickets to compete for the Hùng Vương Cup, which will be held in the northern province of Phú Thọ from April 24-27. The second round of the championship will be organised from December 25-28 this year.

V. League 1 side HCM City will have to do without midfielder Vũ Ngọc Thịnh for the rest of this season, the club announced yesterday. Thịnh was injured during HCM City’s 3-1 win over Nam Định on Sunday. The 25-year-old went down after a tackle in the 62th minute and was forced to leave the game held at Thiên Trường Stadium. According to doctors, Thịnh tore knee ligaments and will be out at least eight months to recover. “I am very sad as I can’t contribute any more to the team. Now I have to stop competing,” said Thịnh, who was last capped for the national side in 2016. The northern port city of Hải Phòng-born player Thịnh scored the only goal to help HCM beat Đồng Tháp 1-0 in the qualifying round of National Cup on April 9.

FPT University and the Academy of Finance triumphed at the Việt Nam University Games (VUG) finals in Hà Nội on Sunday. In the Dance Battle, the Academy of Finance defeated its historic rivals including the National University of Civil Engineering, Foreign Trade University and Academy of Journalism and Communication to nab the victory for the first time. Phương Đông University were the runners-up. In the futsal category, FPT University beat National University of Civil Engineering 2-1 in the final to take the title. Thăng Long University took third place. The event drew thousands of students in Hà Nội to cheer for their teams at the Hà Nội University of Science and Technology’s Gymnasium. The VUG’s next final for HCM City area will take place on April 21. Launched in 2013, VUG is one of the largest sporting events for students in futsal and freestyle dance. This year, the event attracted 80 universities and colleges in six cities and provinces across the country.

Saigon Heat defeated Thang Long Warriors 3-2 on the last day of the qualifying match in the Việt Nam Futsal League (VFL). The match was held in the Military Zone 5 Gymnasium in Đà Nẵng City on Sunday. Nguyễn Đắc Huy scored the opener for Warriors in the first few seconds of the game. But before the first half was over, Đinh Văn Đoàn had levelled the score for Heat. After the break, Heat made continuous counter attacks to score two more goals, while the capital team, Warriors, narrowed the gap to 2-3 with only a minute remaining. In other matches, Hanoi Buffaloes lost to Cantho Catfish 2-5, and HCM City Wings crushed Danang Dragons 7-1. Four teams have topped the rankings in the qualification round - Hanoi Buffaloes (nine points), HCM City Wings (eight points), Saigon Heat (eight points) and Cantho Catfish (seven points). They will enter the semi-finals, which will take place this weekend at Rạch Miễu Gymnasium in HCM City.
