The issue was discussed during a meeting on April 19 held by Hanoi Chairman Nguyen Duc Chung.

Director of the Department of Construction Le Van Duc said the pumping system had been upgraded and could provide an additional of 100,000 cubic metres per day. However, the capital’s population had also increased so there may be water shortages in districts on higher ground.

In the peak of summer, Hanoi may lack 20,000 to 24,000 cubic metres a day to provide to several wards and districts including Khuong Trung, Khuong Mai and Thinh Liet. Moreover, the Da River water pipe also had lower capacity than previously.

"Water availability will be rotated or water trucks will be sent to some wards," Duc said.

A representative of the Department of Health warned about the water quality and suggested shutting down substandard facilities.

Hanoi Chairman Nguyen Duc Chung asked related agencies to implement measures to prevent water leaks. The Department of Health was asked to monitor the water quality and promote the information. The city`s water plants must improve even more so that the people in the city can drink water out of their taps by 2020.
