Students create automatic watering pump with waste materials

Nguyen Dai Duong and Le The Hoan, students at Trieu Trach Secondary School in Quang Tri province, have created a simple watering system run with electric circuits used to water crops.

The watering system created by secondary school students

Duong and Hoan had the idea after seeing a security guard watering plants at the school every day. The guard had to carry the pump and electric wires to many different places. The operation was not safe.  Duong and Hoan also saw farmers in the central province of Quang Tri working hard on fields watering plants manually.

“We decided to create a product to irrigate crops automatically and conveniently,” Duong said. It took the two students 3-4 months to complete the technical drawing, find materials, create the electric circuit, and assemble the system. The watering system is made of cheap waste materials like old mobile phones and electronic components.

The machine has a contact to turn the pump on and off, a remote control unit which ‘gives orders’ through phone calls or messages, and an electric circuit. According to Hoan, one system can run four pumps, thus improving watering efficiency. The system can also be used to automatically control a number of other circuit systems such as lighting systems, outdoor lighting systems and cameras’ electric networks. The system helps farmers irrigate crops in an easy and convenient way.

It can be used at any time and can be regulated by anyone. “The product can be operated manually or regulated from a distance through users’ calls or messages. As there is a timer unit, it is suitable to all types of land, plants and terrains,” Hoan explained. Each pump operates separately during the time set.

The system can also be used to automatically control a number of other circuit systems such as lighting systems, outdoor lighting systems and cameras’ electric networks.

Duong and Hoan believe their products have advantages over other products of the same kind in the market.  Besides being cheap (VND800,000), it has four portals to control four pumps, while the other products are expensive and only have one portal.

The system, with a humidity sensor, can automatically stop watering when it rains. Tran Quoc Vuong, who is Duong and Hoan’s teacher, believes the system not only could be used in households, but also on a large scale, such as in cities, parks and large farms.
